Hidden Toxins in Conventional Beauty products

If you are like the average American woman, you use at least a dozen different products every day without even thinking about them. As a society, we are becoming increasingly aware that certain ingredients in these common products could harm our health and even cause irreversable damage.

Beauty product labels are not required to list every ingredient it contains. Furthermore, many ingredients are hidden under trademarked names. Most ingredients, even if they are listed, are unfamiliar to the average person.

A quick glance down the cosmetics aisle and you will see key phrases on cosmetic bottles like BPA-Free, Phthalate- and Paraben-Free. But what do these chemicals actually mean to our health and beauty? In the US, over 10,000 industrial chemicals are used as ingredients in personal care products. Most occur in low levels that are considered "safe" by regulating agencies, but they aren’t tested for safety with long-term use before they hit the store shelves. The FDA’s Office of Cosmetics and Colors admittedly states that “a cosmetic manufacturer may use almost any raw material as a cosmetic ingredient and market the product without an approval from the FDA.” That's concerning!

What is most unsettling are the dangerous ingredients that act as endocrine disruptors. Your endocrine system is a system of glands that regulate biological processes like growth and development, metabolism, tissue function, and mood. It secretes hormones into the bloodstream, which act as messengers, telling different parts of the body what to do and how to do it. An endocrine disruptor is a synthetic chemical that does what its name implies – it disrupts your body’s natural signals.

These hormone doppelgängers have the potential for a wide variety of side effects, ranging from mild issues like acne and weight gain to potentially serious conditions like birth defects and cancer. Since beauty products are applied directly to the largest organ in the body, your skin, harmful compounds enter the bloodstream immediately, bypassing the protective mechanisms in the gut and liver. Even more importantly, toxins can accumulate in our bodies because the body does not rid them as fast as we intake them, a process called bioaccumulation. So even low doses, if exposed frequently for a sustained period of time, can lead to dangerous concentrations within us.

Please pay attention to the product description and how its made. It is important to know what those unpronouncable words mean before you buy it.

Here is an example of a safe, natural product EverGreen is carrying for healthy skin, hair, and nails:

Liquid Coconut Oil:

                                                              COLD PRESSED
                                                               EXPELLER PRESSED
                                                             FRACTIONATED
                                                             GLUTEN-FREE
                                                               NON-GMO
                                                               PARABEN FREE
                                                               VEGAN/VEGETARIAN

What does it mean?

Cold pressed: one of the best methods to extract essential oils. It is a method of mechanical extraction where heat is reduced and minimized throughout the batching of the raw material.

Expeller pressing: the method of extracting oil with a mechanical press rather than utilizing a chemical extraction process. There are no solvent (chemical) residues in oil that has been expeller pressed resulting in a cleaner purer oil, higher in natural colors and flavors.

Fractionated: Coconut Oil is an all-natural carrier oil that readily absorbs into the skin, making it an ideal oil for topical delivery. Its feather-light emollient effect provides a soothing barrier without clogging pores and is excellent for dry or troubled skin.
