Colon Health

Colon: The long, coiled, tubelike organ that removes water from digested food. The remaining material, solid waste called stool, moves through the colon to the rectum and leaves the body through the anus. Also known as large bowel and large intestine.

Many disorders affect the colon's ability to work properly. Some of these include:

Colorectal cancer
Colonic polyps - extra tissue growing in the colon that can become cancerous
Ulcerative colitis - ulcers of the colon and rectum
Diverticulitis - inflammation or infection of pouches in the colon
Irritable bowel syndrome - an uncomfortable condition causing abdominal cramping and other symptoms

Excluding skin cancers, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States. The American Cancer Society’s estimates for the number of colorectal cancer cases in the United States for 2017 are:
95,520 new cases of colon cancer
39,910 new cases of rectal cancer
