Kidney Health

The kidneys are a pair of organs located in the back of the abdomen. Each kidney is about 4-5 inches long, about the size of an adult fist.

The kidneys' function are to filter blood. All the blood in our bodies passes through the kidneys several times a day. The kidneys remove wastes, control the body's fluid balance, and regulate the balance of electrolytes. As the kidneys filter blood, they create urine, which collects in the kidneys' pelvis in funnel-shaped structures. The urine then drains down tubes called ureters to the bladder.

Each kidney contains around a million filtration units called nephrons, each of which is a microscopic filter for blood. It's possible to lose as much as 90% of kidney function without experiencing any symptoms or problems.

A diagnosis of kidney disease means that a person’s kidneys are damaged and cannot filter blood the way they should. This damage can cause wastes to build up in the body leading to kidney disease. Kidney disease can cause other health problems, such as heart disease. Kidney disease increases your chances of having a stroke or heart attack. Major risk factors for kidney disease include diabetes, high blood pressure, and family history of kidney failure.

Kidney disease often has no symptoms in its early stages and can go undetected until it is very advanced. For this reason, kidney disease is often referred to as a “silent disease.” Each year, kidney disease kills more people than breast or prostate cancer. In 2013, more than 47,000 Americans died from kidney disease.
